The last group of pieces for the Brewery Arts exhibition are in the bisque firing; a good glaze firing came out last night, and we have sent off the invitations for the launch event on 14th March.

This sequence shows the layers of slip and drawing gradually building up the image on each piece. I need to remember what is underneath so often photograph each layer on my phone and document all in a journal. These pieces will be glazed tomorrow.

In this final group, I have pulled together some of the ideas from the earlier pieces – assemblies of hooks and slings supporting plates, spoons or simple drawings. The two-part construction offers me an opportunity to think about places in alternative ways – an old tree surviving in a new orchard, a pylon or water tower imposing on a rural place – essential to us, and beautiful in their own right. But take down the plate or attachment and the place is there without its ‘imposition’.

These are new ideas. I hope I’ll be able talk more articulately about them by the time I talk about them at the Tour of the Exhibition on 28th March.

We have arranged an informal opening event for the show – Brewery Arts don’t offer a Private View as ‘no-one ever comes’.  There will be tea’ coffee and cake, and the bar and cafe will be open.  Maggie Barnes, my some-time mentor during this project, has sent out a beautiful email to her contacts. I’d have been far too modest to write such things, but include it here as it’s already out there.

One of the pieces  waiting to be installed at Brewery Arts is a 6 part hedge construction. I haven’t photographed it yet – no room in the workshop – and space is becoming such an issue in the studio that I am stacking pieces everywhere.

This little pile of pieces has alerted me to new possibilities with these hedge pieces. Often such serendipity plays a part in the generation of new ideas. I can’t wait to be making a piece for Ceramic Art London…

Looking at the most recent pieces, it occurs to me that I have at last made a leap towards making completely non functional ceramics and I feel relaxed about the transition. Some are constructed in several parts. Here’s a taster.

There have been a few sleepless nights as I wonder how or if we will be able to install these fragile pieces in the gallery – there are people walking through at all times. But there’s always a way….

An artist friend, Chris Murray, visited on Friday to chew over ideas and lunch. He made an interesting observation. In the top of the 3rd image ‘Hedge and mill assembled’ is a piece consisting of a box and a group of spoons in the form of birch trees. Chris commented that I am approaching landscape from a new direction- I think he said ‘upside down’- by finding spoons in landscape rather than the other way around.

There was near disaster yesterday. I packed the glaze firing very carefully – large flat things being notoriously difficult to fire without cracking.  I offered up one piece (on a bit of MDF to avoid marking the kilnshelf) to make sure there was room for both on the shelf…. when I came to insert the bungs several hours later the workshop stank  and we were baffled. Sat in the car for ages trying to think : was it a smell we could safely ignore?  Looking at the bit of MDF this morning it seems we turned off the kiln minutes before it caught fire; several of my best pieces could have been lost. Very stupid.
